After his latest release “Power Plant” and his remixes for Laurent Chanal, O.D.Math has been featured on Change Underground with an interview and an “Essential Mix”.
BRUSSELS BASED DJ AND PRODUCER O.D.MATH HAS BEEN IN THE BUSINESS FOR OVER 15 YEARS AND IS SOMEBODY WE HAVE OUR EYE ON.
How old are you, where are you living and how long have you been producing and Djing?
I’m 35 years old. I was born and raised in Brussels, Belgium & still living there. I’ve been djing for over 15 years now but producing only since around 2010 with my first release in 2013.
What made you get into dance music?
When I was 16 years old, before even stepping into any nightclub, I discovered House & Techno through famous Belgian compilations like Serious Beats or others. I instantly fell in love with the sound and started to do my own mixtapes for my school friends.
Talk to us about your latest release and the inspiration behind it.
It’s a remix for french artist Laurent Chanal on my home label, Electronical Reeds. The original is a perfect beach tune in a progressive dreamy vibe and I wanted to take it to the clubs for more sweat action. There is the main remix that focuses on the deep and dark side of summer dancefloors but also the “beatless” & “beats & bass” versions.
What’s the music scene like where you live and how often are you playing?
The Brussels’ scene is a bit strange. Apart from the big institution that is the Fuse (23 years in the game), underground clubs usually don’t last for too long. Most of the party people are easily bored, so concepts are changing quite often. They also are pretty lazy in term of going away from their comfort zone of 3-4 neighbourhoods. But it’s not all bad as the Belgian crowd has generally a good musical education and is hungry for new sounds.
I used to play a lot more but for now, I have 1 gig per week in the city as I try to focus on quality and not quantity. Moreover, I’m also focusing on getting out of Brussels to experience the international scene.
Which other DJs or producers are you liking right now?
Eagles & Butterflies, Tim Engelhardt, Man Power, SBTH (Matthias Schober & Thomas Herb) & Marvin & Guy to name a few.
What are your go to labels?
Upon You, Pampa Records, Connaisseur, My Favorite Robot, Moodmusic Records.
Tell us about your DJ setup
I’m using 2-3 CDJ 2000 Nexus & a DJM 900 Nexus or Xone 92. I used to carry tons of vinyls but it’s much more comfortable to work with Rekordbox nowadays.
What’s been your biggest achievement
Being part of the Brussels nightlife for more than 15 years is a big one but if I had one gig in mind, it would be a hybrid dj/live reprise of Beethoven’s 5th with 20 classic musicians I did in 2009.
What can we expect from you soon
There is a remix on the way for Jan Mir to be released on Mukke (Kattermukke sister label) I did with my good friend Felix Cage that will be out mid-July. I’m finalising new material for September/October but I can’t tell you the release details yet here. And I’m also working on a mix/compilation for the end of the year for Electronical Reeds.
